Palestinian Sociologist Dr. Salim Tamari heads the Institute of Jerusalem Studies and is a member of the Refugee Working Group that deals with the question of refugees established in the wake of the Madrid conference.

In this interview, Tamari describes the new book Jerusalem containing a collection of articles on Palestinian residency in West Jerusalem before the 1948.

Tamari provides insight into what the Israeli strategy has been vis à vis the refugees in negotiations and discusses what the PA will have to face when final status negotiations begin.

The European Marches Network will also organise a European Meeting against Precarity, in Brussels, in the first half of 2000, and mass mobilisations in France in the second half of the year. These will include a new session of the "European Parliament of the Unemployed". Marxism 2000 Sydney, Australia, 5-9 January 2000 Journalist John Pilger and Latin America specialist James Petras will be keynote speakers at the second Asia Pacific Solidarity and Education conference organised by Australia's Democratic Socialist Party. Other speakers include Dipankar Bhattacharya (CPI-ML, India), Chris Gaerlan (Alab-Katipunan, Philippines), Farooq Tariq (Labour Party of Pakistan) and Sonny Melencio (Socialist Party of Labour, Philippines).

Participants are expected from Japan, East Timor, Burma, PNG, Bougainville, Malaysia, New Zealand, Kanaky, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Palestine, and Bangladesh.
